Stereolithography

Stereolithography, also known as 3-D layering or 3-D printing, allows you to create solid, plastic, three-dimensional (3-D) objects from CAD drawings in a matter of hours. Whether you are a mechanical engineer wanting to verify the fit of a part or an inventor looking to create a plastic prototype of an invention, Stereolithography gives you a fast, easy way to turn CAD drawings into real objects.

3-D printing is a very good example of the age we live in. In the past, it could conceivably take months to prototype a part — today you can do it hours. If you can dream up a product, you can hold a working model in your hands two days later! In this edition of How Stuff Works, we will take a tour of the Stereolithography service bureau at PT CAM (Piedmont Triad Center for Advanced Manufacturing) so that you can understand everything involved and see some actual 3-D models that this technology has produced!

Argumented reality

Augmented reality (AR) refers to computer displays that add virtual information to a user’s sensory perceptions. Most AR research focuses on see-through devices, usually worn on the head that overlay graphics and text on the user’s view of his or her surroundings.

In general it superimposes graphics over a real world environment in real time. Getting the right information at the right time and the right place is key in all these applications. Personal digital assistants such as the Palm and the Pocket PC can provide timely information using wireless networking and Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers that constantly track the handheld devices. But what makes augmented reality different is how the information is presented: not on a separate display but integrated with the user’s perceptions.

Artificial intelligence for speech recognition

Artificial intelligence (AI) involves two basic ideas. First, it involves studying the thought processes of human beings. Second, it deals with representing those processes via machines (like computers, robots, etc).AI is behaviour of a machine, which, if performed by a human being, would be called intelligence.

It makes machines smarter and more useful, and is less expensive than natural intelligence.

Natural language processing (NLP) refers to artificial intelligence methods of communicating with a computer in a natural language like English. The main objective of a NLP program is to understand input and initiate action.

The input words are scanned and matched against internally stored known words. Identification of a keyword causes some action to be taken. In this way, one can communicate with the computer in one’s language. No special commands or computer language are required. There is no need to enter programs in a special language for creating software.

Infini band

Amdahl’s Law is one of the fundamental principles of computer science and basically states that efficient systems must provide a balance between CPU performance, memory bandwidth, and I/O performance. At odds with this, is Moore’s Law which has accurately predicted that semiconductors double their performance roughly every 18 months. Since I/O interconnects are governed by mechanical and electrical limitations more severe than the scaling capabilities of semiconductors, these two laws lead to an eventual imbalance and limit system performance. This would suggest that I/O interconnects need to radically change every few years in order to maintain system performance. In fact, there is another practical law which prevents I/O interconnects from changing frequently - if it am not broke don’t fix it.

Bus architectures have a tremendous amount of inertia because they dictate the bus interface architecture of semiconductor devices. For this reason, successful bus architectures typically enjoy a dominant position for ten years or more. The PCI bus was introduced to the standard PC architecture in the early 90’s and has maintained its dominance with only one major upgrade during that period: from 32 bit/33 MHz to 64bit/66Mhz. The PCI-X initiative takes this one step further to 133MHz and seemingly should provide the PCI architecture with a few more years of life. But there is a divergence between what personal computer and servers require.

STL library unlekkerLib for Stereolithography

StereolithographyRapid prototyping objects generated with Processing and output to STL using unlekkerLib.

I’ve just uploaded a new Processing library called unlekkerLib. It is a collection of tools and code snippets I use frequently, and which I’ve now just barely cleaned up enough for other people to use. Instead of releasing them piece by piece, I’ve decided to bundle them together in a package hierarchy.

The main reason I decided to release it now is the STL export code I’ve written for my rapid prototyping projects. Several people have asked for the code, so I wanted to get it out there for you to play with. Obviously, it works as well with Processing as it does with regular Java.

Caveat emptor:There’s not much documentation but I do provide the source code. This is v.0001 - the very first release, so it’s pretty basic. See below for an idea of what the library contains. Right now the most exciting new component is the unlekker.data.STL class, which supports export and import of STL stereolithography files for rapid prototyping. Have a look at the Javadoc for more details.

Silicon photonics

Silicon photonics is a field in which photonic devices are produced by using standard microelectronic facilities. This technology has shown several improvements and breakthroughs in the recent period. Silicon photonics studies the scope of convergence between electronics and photonics on a very same semiconductor chip. Both passive and active optical functionalities have been made possible in silicon. The optical modulation techniques were considered impossible in Silicon due to the lack of any electro-optical effects. But on the course of research it has been demonstrated at the high speeds needed for advanced communication.

Researchers at Intel and UCSB (University of California, Santa Barbara) have announced another advance in silicon photonics by demonstrating the first continuous silicon laser based on the Raman Effect. The electrically driven hybrid silicon laser is demonstrated on September 18, 2006 as a combined effort of Intel and UCSB. This breakthrough in silicon photonics makes the dream of constructing optical amplifiers, lasers and wavelength converters to switch a signal’s color in low-cost silicon wafer possible. It also brings us closer to realizing a big hurdle of “siliconizing” photonics, which will enable the creation of inexpensive, high-performance optical, interconnects in and around PCs, servers and other devices.
